Frequently asked questions

How do I get started?

Book a free 15-minute phone consultation online, or call 416-624-7627. The call is a chance to ask questions and see if we're a good fit — it's an information conversation, not a therapy session, and there's no obligation.

How long does therapy take?

It depends on your goals and history, and we'll talk openly about it as we go. Most clients start to notice improvements within the first few sessions, as our early work focuses on practical coping strategies you can use right away.

I've tried therapy before and it didn't help. Will this be different?

Maybe — and it's worth finding out. Research consistently shows the fit between client and therapist is one of the biggest factors in whether therapy works. If past therapy felt like a bad fit, that says something about the match, not about you. The free consultation exists exactly for this.

Do you offer online (virtual) therapy?

Yes. Video and telephone sessions are available across Ontario for returning clients booking non-EMDR counselling sessions. New clients attend their first sessions in person at the Etobicoke office, and EMDR sessions are held in person.

Is therapy covered by insurance?

Therapy Avenue is a private-pay practice. You'll receive a receipt with the codes most extended health plans need for reimbursement of Registered Psychotherapist services — check your plan for 'psychotherapist' coverage. Psychologist-supervised sessions are available if your insurer only reimburses services overseen by a registered psychologist.

How do I pay?

E-transfer and credit card are both accepted.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and missed sessions are charged the full session fee, as that time was reserved for you.

Is your office accessible?

Yes — the office at 10 Four Seasons Place in Etobicoke is wheelchair accessible.

Who do you work with?

Adults and couples. My practice is inclusive and affirming: clients of every race, culture, faith, body, gender, and orientation are welcome. 2SLGBTQI+ allied. I bring a trauma-informed, harm-reduction approach to everything, and as a Black therapist I offer culturally attuned care that many clients haven't found elsewhere.

What's the difference between a psychotherapist, psychologist, and psychiatrist?

A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and provides talk therapy. A psychologist holds a doctorate, can diagnose, and is regulated by the College of Psychologists. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. Many people see an RP for therapy while a family doctor or psychiatrist manages any medication.
