Depression Therapy

Depression tells convincing lies — that you're lazy, that nothing will change, that you're a burden. Therapy is where those lies get examined in daylight.

What depression can look like

Depression isn't always sadness. Just as often it's:

  • Heaviness — everything takes three times the effort it should
  • Flatness: food, music, people you love, all somehow grayed out
  • Irritability and a short fuse (a common face of depression, especially in men)
  • Sleeping too much or barely at all; appetite up or gone
  • Brain fog, indecision, trouble caring about outcomes
  • Going through the motions perfectly while feeling nothing — high-functioning depression is still depression
  • Thoughts that everyone would be fine without you

(If you're having thoughts of ending your life, please reach out now: call or text 9-8-8, Canada's Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7. Therapy can wait until tomorrow; your safety can't.)

How depression therapy works here

We start small on purpose. Depression shrinks capacity, so we don't begin with grand plans. We begin with what's possible this week — and we treat every small step as the real progress it is.

We look at the whole picture. Depression has many roots: loss, burnout, chronic stress, trauma, discrimination and racial weathering, loneliness, biology. Naming your roots matters, because it shapes what will actually help. When old experiences are feeding the present darkness, trauma-focused work like EMDR can be part of the plan.

We work with the inner critic. Depression usually comes with a voice that narrates your failures. We get to know that voice, understand where it learned its script, and loosen its authority.

We rebuild connection — carefully. To activities, to people, to meaning. Not by forcing positivity, but by rediscovering, at your pace, what makes life feel like yours.

A note on asking for help

Many of my clients — especially those raised to be the strong one, the provider, the one everyone else leans on — waited years longer than they needed to. Depression thrives in isolation and silence. You don't have to earn the right to support by getting worse first. If today is the day you have the energy to reach out, that's enough.
